"At 94, He Still Cooks and Carries Meals to the Hospital — Every Single Day"

Kerala Kaumudi Epaper · By K.S. Aravind

The Kerala Kaumudi's Kaumudi Special feature (30 April 2026) profiles M. Radhakrishna Pillai, now 94 years old, who continues to oversee the cooking and delivery of free noon meals to patients at Ward 9 of Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital — a commitment he has maintained without a single break for 26 years.

The article highlights the remarkable discipline of the meals: a minimum of four curries is compulsory for every serving. The food is cooked in Sri Pillai's own home at Lekshmi Mandiram and personally brought to the hospital. Even on the day his wife Indiramma passed away, the meals were not stopped.

— Mohanlal (television programme, as reported in Kerala Kaumudi)

The feature also notes that the Society's work gained attention when the then Superintendent of the hospital, Supraja, appreciated their commitment. The administration and the Health Minister later facilitated upgrades to the ward. Cooking volunteers — Venugopala Krishnanarayan, Jayalakshmi, and others — are named as the backbone of the cooking team.

Twilight Travellers"

The Society That Prints Its Income-Expense Accounts and Distributes Them Every Year

Vanitha Magazine's celebrated "Sayahna Savarigal" (Twilight Travellers) series dedicated a 4-page spread (pp. 26–29) to Sri M. Radhakrishna Pillai and Matha Vanitha Charitable Society in its April 25–May 8, 2026 issue.

The spread features a stunning full-page portrait (p.27) of Pillai captioned "ദൈവം ഒൻപതാം വാർഡിൽ" (God in Ward Nine), alongside the team photo of Jayalakshmi, Sasinarayanan, Shilaja Venugopala, and others who have sustained this mission for 26 years.

— M. Radhakrishna Pillai (Vanitha Magazine, April 2026)

A notable detail highlighted in the article: the Society prints its full annual income-expense accounts and distributes them to all supporters — extraordinary transparency almost unheard of in charitable organisations.

Vanitha Magazine page 26 — Ward 9 story

"Ward 9 Was Once Called Hell on Earth. That Has Changed."

The first part of Vanitha's spread (page 26) recounts how Ward 9 of Trivandrum General Hospital was notorious for its wretched conditions — abandoned elderly patients, no food, no care. The Matha Vanitha Society's silent, consistent presence changed the ward's fate.

— Vanitha Magazine readers' response

The article describes how Mohanlal, after appearing on a television programme alongside Pillai, affectionately called him "Swami Appupan" — a spiritual grandfather — and praised his extraordinary life. Mohanlal's words, shared in the telecast, brought national attention to the Society's work.

  • Engage in work of the highest quality (കാര്യങ്ങൾ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കൂ)
  • Community participation — groups, neighbourhood networks, social service associations
  • Hobbies: reading, farming, cooking, music
  • Meaningful sleep: 7–8 hours; avoid excessive rest
  • Healthy eating — include vegetables; avoid processed food

"Pillai's Lunch Mission Continues to Be a Fulfilling Cause"

The New Indian Express profiled Sri M. Radhakrishna Pillai's extraordinary mission, noting that over two decades after he started the free meal programme, the commitment remains as strong as ever. The report highlighted how he and the Matha Vanitha Society have served continuously at Ward 9 of General Hospital, Trivandrum, since 28 April 2000.

The article captured how family members and well-wishers have joined in over the years, particularly on Thursdays — the day Pillai's family dedicates to Annadanam — turning it into a community ritual. It also noted how the Society has expanded its services to adjacent wards, providing meals to 80–200 patients daily.

"I will not let the people in the ward go without food. It is as simple as that."

Mohanlal Calls Him "Swami Appupan" — My Big Salute

Actor Mohanlal, one of Malayalam cinema's most beloved stars, appeared alongside M. Radhakrishna Pillai in a television programme. Deeply moved by Pillai's account of his life of service, Mohanlal addressed him as "Swami Appupan" — a term of profound reverence combining the idea of a spiritual teacher and a beloved grandfather.

— Mohanlal (as quoted in Vanitha Magazine, April 2026)

The programme brought national attention to Pillai's quiet mission and to Matha Vanitha Charitable Society. Mohanlal's words were later cited in multiple print and digital media stories about the Society.
