It began with a retired government employee, M. Radhakrishna Pillai, who noticed destitute patients in the 9th ward of Trivandrum General Hospital going hungry. With his meagre pension, he started feeding them — quietly, without fanfare.
A group of women joined him. They registered Matha Vanitha Charitable Society on 1 March 2000. Since 28 April 2000, not one day has passed without a warm noon meal reaching the patients of Ward 9.

At 94, he still oversees the cooking and delivery of meals every single day from his residence on Kabarady Road. His wife Indiramma passed away years ago, but her spirit of service lives on in the Society she co-founded.
Actor Mohanlal called him "Swami Appupan" — a grandfather-saint — and praised his extraordinary life of service on national television.
"When they eat, and their faces light up — my eyes fill with tears. That is my pension."
